Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure announced that a lightning strike led to the shutdown of Armenia’s only nuclear power plant (NPP).
The ministry stated that the incident happened last Friday evening and resulted in the plant ceasing operations, according to Russian news agency Interfax.
The plant, located 25 km from the capital city of Yerevan, is under the supervision of the Armenian government.
The ministry explained that the lightning strike triggered the plant's safety systems, which automatically initiated a safe shutdown procedure to ensure the facility's security.
