Egypt is set to host Africa’s largest integrated solar and battery storage project, following a landmark agreement signed by Norwegian renewable energy giant Scatec.

The deal, announced on Sunday, establishes a 1.95-gigawatt solar power plant paired with 3.9-gigawatt-hour battery energy storage systems (BESS), marking the company’s largest investment on the continent.

Under the agreement, Scatec will supply a fully hybrid system designed to deliver uninterrupted renewable energy around the clock. The company has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, securing electricity sales for the next 25 years, with payments denominated in U.S. dollars.

“This agreement strengthens Scatec’s position in Africa and underscores our commitment to providing reliable, renewable power at scale,” said Terje Pilskog, CEO of Scatec. “By combining advanced solar technologies with battery storage, we can provide Egypt with sustainable power 24/7 while supporting grid stability and long-term economic development.”

The project comprises two independent battery storage systems aimed at enhancing grid resilience and ensuring consistent electricity supply for industrial and residential areas. Once operational, it is expected to generate approximately 6,000 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually.

Scatec will oversee engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), as well as asset management and operations and maintenance (O&M). The company also plans to bring in additional equity partners, with final project financing and capital expenditure details expected to be disclosed in the second half of 2026.

The initiative reflects Egypt’s ongoing push toward energy transition, renewable self-sufficiency, and the localization of green technologies. By leveraging large-scale hybrid projects, the government aims to meet growing electricity demand while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

With this project, Scatec positions itself at the forefront of Africa’s renewable energy expansion, setting a new benchmark for solar and battery integration on the continent.
