Norway is preparing to introduce new restrictions on children and teenagers’ use of social media, joining a growing list of countries tightening digital access for minors.

The government announced on Friday that the proposed legislation responds to increasing public concern over the impact of social media on young people. The bill is expected to be presented to parliament before the end of the year.

Under the plan, social media restrictions would apply until 1 January of the year in which a child turns 16, with technology companies made responsible for enforcing age verification.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre noted that the aim is to protect childhood development from excessive digital influence.

“We want a childhood where children are children,” he said in a government statement, adding that algorithms and screens should not dominate play, friendships, and everyday life.

The move reflects a broader international trend, with countries such as Australia and Greece already introducing or expanding restrictions on minors’ access to social media platforms, while several other governments are reportedly considering similar measures.

The proposal places Norway at the forefront of Europe’s debate over child safety online, digital regulation, and the long-term effects of social media on mental health and development.
