The northern lights may be visible tonight and into early Tuesday morning across several northern US states, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

Forecasters say auroras could be seen in Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine.

If geomagnetic activity intensifies, faint displays may also appear farther south in states such as Wyoming, Iowa, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

The Kp index, a measure of geomagnetic activity, is expected to peak at 4.67 out of 9, a level that can push auroras beyond the Arctic Circle and into parts of the US mid-latitudes.

SWPC is also predicting G1-level geomagnetic storm conditions, which increase the chances of visible auroral activity.

Viewing conditions are favorable, as the waxing crescent moon is only six percent illuminated, limiting moonlight interference.

Experts recommend heading to a dark location away from city lights, facing north with a clear view of the horizon.

Using a smartphone camera can also help detect faint auroras that may be difficult to see with the naked eye.
