The first stage of the modernization project at the Ryongsong Machine Complex has been completed, transforming the facility into a large-scale, modern machine-building base intended to support the independent development and technological advancement of North Korea’s national economy.
According to state media, the project was carried out under the direct guidance of Kim Jong Un, who identified the modernization of the machine-building sector as a strategic priority during the Eighth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea. Ryongsong was designated as a model enterprise, with step-by-step goals aimed at turning it into a standard for industrial modernization across the country.
Workers, scientists, and technicians at the complex completed the first-stage upgrade through what was described as a sustained campaign emphasizing self-reliance and technological independence. The modernization is presented as having strengthened the material and technical foundations of the factory, while also generating experience intended to be replicated across other machine-building facilities.
An inauguration ceremony marking the completion of the first stage was held in South Hamgyong Province, attended by senior party and government officials, scientists, engineers, and factory employees. Kim Jong Un personally attended the event, where he was greeted by provincial leaders and management officials of the complex.
In remarks delivered at the ceremony, government officials praised the project as evidence of the country’s industrial potential and its capacity to advance economic development based on domestic resources and expertise. The completion of the project ahead of the Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party was highlighted as symbolically significant.
Kim Jong Un addressed the gathering, thanking workers, researchers, and builders for their contributions and emphasizing that the modernization effort was not only about upgrading facilities, but also about improving discipline, responsibility, and effectiveness in economic management. He stressed that modern machine-building capabilities are essential to sustaining growth across all sectors of the economy.
During his visit, Kim toured the upgraded facilities and outlined objectives for the next phase of modernization. He called on the machine-building sector to focus on producing efficient, high-quality equipment, intensifying scientific research, and strengthening technical manpower. The second-stage modernization of the Ryongsong Machine Complex was presented as a key step toward placing the entire machine-building industry on a more advanced footing.
The completion of the first-stage modernization at Ryongsong was portrayed by state media as a milestone demonstrating the country’s determination to pursue socialist construction through self-reliance, technological progress, and industrial upgrading.
