North Korea's foreign ministry accused Seoul and Washington on Monday of pushing tensions on the Korean peninsula to the "brink of nuclear war" similar to the 1950-53 Korean War, saying it would continue to build up its self-defense capabilities.

The ministry warned that a war on the peninsula could "rapidly expand into a world war and an unprecedented nuclear war in the world," which would cause "irreparable catastrophic consequences" for peace and security in the region and the rest of the world.

The report released by the Northern foreign ministry said that Pyongyang will continue to accelerate efforts to enhance its "self-defense capabilities to protect its sovereignty" unless the United States abandons its "outdated hostile policy" and constant military threat against the North.
