The South Korean military said that, on Sunday, North Korea launched a ballistic missile off its east coast towards the sea, in the eighth missile test this year.

The southern military said the missile, launched at 7:52 a.m. from Sinan near Pyongyang, the North's capital, flew 186 miles to the east, reaching an altitude of 385 miles.

North Korea has conducted seven missile tests in January, more than all of 2021. So far, it has held off on weapons tests this month, perhaps out of respect for China, its neighbor, and only major ally, which has been hosting Beijing Winter Olympics.

South Korea called the missile launch “deeply worrisome and regrettable” in a statement issued by President Moon Jae-in’s office, who called for an urgent meeting with the country’s National Security Council.
