Nicaragua banned all acts of Holy Week celebrations, including fireworks and Easter processions.
Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega prohibited the carrying of sacred images through the streets, in addition to deploying heavy security in front of all cathedrals.
About 14000 police officers were deployed to prevent any procession or other public celebrations of the Holy Week in the streets.
Since 2023, public celebrations of the Holy Week have been banned in the country.
Celebrations or Holy Week rituals are only kept inside the cathedrals.
Press reports, cited by several Christian websites, claimed that "Religious leaders of all types reported regularly receiving verbal orders from security officers not to mention specific subjects including political prisoners, Israel, and the general situation in Nicaragua in any of their public discourse and not to use the combination of the colours blue and white (the colours of the Nicaraguan flag) in any decorations or other materials."
