New Zealand has announced its decision to grant permanent residency to Ukrainian refugees who have fled the ongoing war.
This step aims to offer a safe haven and stability to those affected by the conflict.
The opportunity for permanent residency in New Zealand will be extended to individuals who have escaped the war in Ukraine and have obtained a temporary entry visa, particularly before the 15th of March next year, as stated by Andrew Little, the Minister of Immigration.
Minister Little emphasized that many of the people who came here to New Zealand seeking security may not have anticipated staying for an extended period, but with the continuation of the war, we have a humanitarian duty towards them."
He further added that his country has extended the residency application process to its maximum extent.
As part of this initiative, applicants for permanent residency will not be required to undergo language tests, seek sponsorship from current New Zealand residents, or provide proof of a specified amount of funds.
Since the creation of this visa category in 2022, more than 1,500 special visas have been granted to Ukrainians, highlighting New Zealand's commitment to supporting those affected by the conflict.
This move comes as part of New Zealand's efforts in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
