New Zealand has dismissed its ambassador to the UK, Phil Goff, after he made controversial comments questioning Donald Trump’s knowledge of historical events.

During a roundtable discussion in London on the Russia-Ukraine war, Goff raised concerns about whether Trump fully understands history.

He also compared Trump’s proposed peace negotiations with Russia to the 1938 Munich Agreement, which allowed Nazi Germany to annex parts of Czechoslovakia.

The ambassador suggested that Trump’s approach could pressure Ukraine into accepting a peace deal that leaves large areas of its occupied territory under Russian control.

He referenced Winston Churchill’s strong criticism of the appeasement policy pursued in the late 1930s and questioned whether Trump, who had previously restored a Churchill bust in the White House, truly grasped the lessons of history.

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters swiftly condemned the remarks, stating that they did not reflect the position of the government.

The controversy led to the decision that Goff’s role as ambassador was no longer viable, resulting in his removal from office.
