New Zealand is considering formal recognition of a Palestinian state, with a decision expected in September, according to Foreign Minister Winston Peters.

The government of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is set to outline its position during the United Nations Leaders’ Week in September.

This move comes as several nations, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada, have recently announced their intention to recognize a Palestinian state during the upcoming UN General Assembly session.

Peters emphasized that while some of New Zealand’s closest partners have already chosen to proceed with recognition, the country maintains an independent foreign policy.

He noted that any decision will be grounded in New Zealand’s principles, values, and national interests.

The government will assess whether sufficient progress has been made towards establishing a viable and legitimate Palestinian state before granting official recognition. Peters affirmed that New Zealand’s support for Palestinian statehood has long been clear, with the only question being one of timing.
