A shooting incident and stabbing in New York's iconic Times Square triggered panic among crowds on Thursday, prompting a heightened police presence in one of the city's busiest tourist hubs during the FIFA World Cup period.
Authorities said one person was taken into custody following a violent altercation that led to a stabbing and reports of gunfire, sending pedestrians fleeing the area in search of safety.
A 26-year-old man suffered a stab wound near the intersection of West 45th Street and Eighth Avenue and was transported to hospital in stable condition. Police confirmed that no one was struck by gunfire.
Investigators believe a 17-year-old suspect discharged a firearm during the confrontation. The teenager was detained, while authorities continue to review potential charges.
Surveillance footage reportedly showed a group of men involved in the incident, including one individual dressed in black who appeared to point a handgun before fleeing. Police recovered one firearm at the scene and are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and stabbing.
