New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani announced the closure of public schools tomorrow, Monday, due to severe winter weather, with classes continuing remotely.
In a statement released via the X platform and reported by CNN on Sunday, Mamdani added that this measure will affect 500,000 students in more than 1,100 schools.
Meanwhile, schools are also scheduled to be closed tomorrow and the day after in Nashville, Tennessee, which is experiencing widespread power outages after heavy snowfall caused tree branches to fall on power lines.
A powerful winter storm has left more than 750,000 homes and businesses without power across the United States. Tennessee is the hardest hit, with more than 250,000 customers without electricity, followed by Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
Nearly half of the US population is suffering because of the storm, at a time when nighttime temperatures are dropping below -20 degrees Celsius in some cities.
