Algerian emergency services are battling a new wave of wildfires that erupted across 10 provinces, according to state radio. The country’s Civil Protection authority reported 29 forest fires, noting that 20 have been successfully contained, while efforts continue to extinguish the remaining nine active blazes.
The resurgence of forest fires adds to Algeria’s growing struggle with seasonal wildland blazes, which have intensified in recent years. Experts attribute the trend to a combination of natural factors, including heatwaves, lightning strikes, and strong winds, and human causes, such as negligence, open burning, and agricultural practices that can inadvertently spark fires.
The issue has also fueled speculation and conspiracy theories on social media, where various parties have been blamed without evidence, further complicating public understanding of the crisis.
Algerian authorities have continued to urge citizens to adhere to safety guidelines, avoid activities that may trigger fires, and cooperate with emergency responders as firefighting operations remain underway.
