Netanyahu's Allies Warn of Fall of Government If He Backs Down from Coup Plan Against Judiciary

Israel sees an exacerbation of differences in the ruling right-wing coalition in Israel and opposition to the government.

The pro-government forces insist on advancing their plan to bring about fundamental changes in the system of government and weaken the judiciary.

Meanwhile, the opposing forces fear that the plan will lead to cracks in Israeli society.

Simha Rotman, Chairman of the Constitution Committee in the Knesset (parliament) warns against expressing any intentions to back down from the plan, saying that “backtracking will lead to the fall of the government and the loss of power.”

"Passage of the judicial reform plan is essential and crucial to the survival of the coalition," said Rotman.

In response to a question about what was published about Netanyahu's willingness to concede and reach a compromise on the issue of appointing judges, Rothman added during a radio interview, "The public's elected are obligated to appoint judges so almost nothing can be done in the state without a radical reform of the judiciary.
