Dr. Mohamed El-Kamel, the nephew of Al-Azhar Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, died Monday at the age of 60 in the city of Al-Qurna in Egypt's southern Luxor governorate, family sources said.
According to the sources, El-Kamel, the son of the Grand Imam's sister, died at his home. Funeral prayers and burial arrangements were scheduled to take place in the family's hometown, where mourners are also expected to receive condolences following the funeral.
The death comes months after the passing of Sheikh Baibesh, a longtime caretaker of the Al-Tayeb family's religious gathering place in western Luxor. Baibesh had spent nearly five decades serving visitors and residents at the site and was laid to rest earlier this year in the family's cemetery in the Sayeda Zeinab area of Al-Qurna, in recognition of his years of service.
