Within the framework of implementing the Fourth National Action Plan 2024-2026, emanating from the National Strategy to Combat and Prevent Illegal Migration 2016-2026, which was launched under the auspices of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly last October, the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration, is organizing a conference entitled "Youth Conference on Illegal Migration" on December 9 and 10, 2024 at the Ramses Hilton Hotel in Cairo, as part of the "Raising Awareness on Irregular Migration" project, funded by the Kingdom on the Netherlands.
This conference aims to enhance the awareness of Egyptian youth and migrants residing in Egypt on the dangers of illegal migration, and to highlight the safe alternatives provided by state agencies, such as job opportunities, training, and project support. The conference also focuses on building the capacities of youth and developing their skills in line with labor market requirements, through discussion sessions and specialized workshops that bring together representatives of national bodies, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector.
The conference, held under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, was opened by Ambassador Naela Gabr, Head of the National Coordinating Committee for Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons, and Carlos Oliver Cruz, Chief of Mission of IOM Egypt, along with a representative of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Ambassador Naela Gabr stressed on the importance of youth participation in addressing the complexities of migration stating that they are the future leaders of our society and that their voices, ideas and actions are crucial in shaping policies and strategies to effectively combat illegal migration.
Cruz further elaborated that the aim of this conference is to contribute to the efforts of the Government of Egypt to address irregular migration, by providing a platform for youth, including migrants, to exchange knowledge and share experiences on the drivers of irregular migration, the risks associated with it and to address the root causes.
Over the two days of the conference, there will be pavilions for many governmental and private entities and civil society organizations that provide opportunities for youth, where participants will be able to learn how to apply and benefit from these opportunities.
The conference concludes with a presentation of key recommendations from the youth participants, including effective ways to raise awareness on the dangers of illegal migration, addressing misconceptions about it and promoting safe alternatives for youth. The conference will also select 20 to 30 young people to be “Youth Ambassadors” to raise awareness of the dangers of illegal migration in their communities and make a positive impact.
The conference is a unique platform to empower and encourage young people to adopt innovative solutions to address the challenges of illegal migration, with a focus on enhancing cooperation between governmental and international agencies as well as civil society organizations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
