US authorities in Texas arrested Robert J. O'Neill, the ex-Marine who claims to have killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

O'Neal, 47, was arrested Wednesday and charged with a first-degree misdemeanor count of assault causing bodily injury and a third-degree misdemeanor count of public intoxication, though prison records only list one count of assault.

Police declined to release more information about the arrest. On the same day, O'Neal was released on $3,500 bail. O'Neal was in town to record a podcast at a local cigar lounge.

A former SEAL Team 6 member, O'Neill became widely known after he took credit for killing 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden during a secret US Army raid in 2011.

O'Neill told the story in his 2017 memoir, The Trigger. The US government has never confirmed or denied this story.

In 2016, he was arrested for drunk driving in Montana, but prosecutors later dropped the charges against him.
