NASA’s Perseverance rover has discovered rocks in a long-dry river channel on Mars that may hold signs of ancient microbial life, according to scientists on Wednesday.

The findings suggest that microscopic organisms could once have existed on the Red Planet, but experts stress that only detailed laboratory analysis on Earth can confirm the discovery.

Perseverance has been collecting and storing samples since 2021 using its onboard drill and sealed tubes, targeting areas believed most likely to have supported life billions of years ago.

Nicky Fox, head of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, described the results as the closest the agency has come to uncovering evidence of ancient Martian life. However, she emphasized that the data is not yet a definitive answer.

The rover itself cannot directly detect life, either past or present. Instead, it is gathering samples for an ambitious return mission. That project is currently on hold while NASA evaluates faster and more cost-effective options to transport Martian material back to Earth.

Scientists argue that once the samples are retrieved, advanced testing could confirm whether the chemical and structural signatures preserved in the rocks are the strongest evidence yet that Mars once harbored life.
