On Tuesday, NASA Confirmed that Asteroid 2024 YR4, aka "City-Killer," is no longer a threat to Earth.
After major concerns about a potential collision with the Earth in December 2032, new data asserted that the impact is now "zero," bringing an end to the widespread concerns that had gripped both the scientific community and the public.
Detected in December 2024, the asteroid's initial trajectory indicated a very low probability of collision with Earth.
However, by January 2025, the risk factor increased significantly, making 2024 YR4 the only known asteroid at the time with a collision probability exceeding 1%.
By February 2025, the risk peaked at 3.1%, prompting scientists to assign it a level 3 on the Torino Scale, a system used to classify near-Earth objects based on their potential threat.
If it had collided with Earth, the asteroid could have caused catastrophic damage similar to the 1908 Tunguska event, which destroyed 2,000 square kilometers of Siberian forest.
