A rare set of jewelry that belonged to Stephanie de Beauharnais, the adoptive daughter of the figurative leader Napoleon Bonaparte was sold for more than $1.6 million, Independent Arabia reported on Friday.
The set included a tiara, earrings, a ring, bracelet, and pendants. Each piece was auctioned inpidually at Christie's and their prices broke the record of the prestigious house' estimations.
The prices of each piece wandered between $11,000 to $275,430. The most expensive piece was a sapphire and diamond tiara which were sold for more than $5777,000.
Christie's specialist Lukas Biehler said before the auction: "Under Napoleon's court, jewelry was an essential part of fashion and women would wear matching, tiaras, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, rings, earrings and belts decorated with precious stones,"
He added: "Fashion dictated that the waist was very high on dresses and court ladies needed a belt, which was placed just under the décolleté. High quality sapphires were incredibly rare as it was long before the time of industrial mining."
