Researchers in Iran have developed an advanced antibacterial polyester fabric by integrating nanotechnology into textile production, offering an effective solution to reduce the transmission of microbial contamination in everyday and industrial environments, reportes Mehr News Agency, according toTV BRICS.
Polyester fibres are among the most widely used materials in the global textile industry due to their mechanical strength, resistance to wear, thermal stability, ease of washing and fast drying. These characteristics have made polyester a staple in applications ranging from everyday clothing to household, industrial and public-use textiles. However, growing public health concerns and increased awareness of microbial transmission have highlighted the need to enhance the hygienic performance of such materials.
To address this challenge, Iranian specialists have incorporated antibacterial nanoparticles directly into the structure of polyester fibres. This innovation preserves the inherent durability and affordability of polyester while adding a stable and long-lasting antibacterial function, the source claims.
The nano-enhanced fabric has undergone antibacterial performance testing in accordance with Iran’s national standards. Laboratory evaluations assessed its effectiveness against two common pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Test results indicate antibacterial activity levels within the range considered highly effective under national benchmarks, corresponding to a reduction of at least 99 per cent of microbial load.
The nanoparticles embedded in the fibres disrupt the biological activity of microorganisms, preventing their growth and reproduction. This mechanism not only helps limit the spread of bacteria but also reduces unpleasant odours caused by microbial activity and improves the long-term hygienic durability of the fabric. The material also demonstrates resistance to fungal growth, making it suitable for use in humid or high-contact environments.
Experts claim that the antibacterial polyester fabric is designed for a wide range of applications, including seating covers in public transport and high-traffic spaces, children’s clothing, workwear, bedding and other household and hygiene-related textiles.
