U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tested positive for Covid-19, a spokesman for the California Democrat announced on Thursday.

"After testing negative this week, Speaker Pelosi received a positive test result for COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic," Pelosi's deputy chief of staff Drew Hammill tweeted.

Hammill announced the positive test result came just before Pelosi was scheduled to have her weekly news conference with reporters, which was canceled.

He also said a planned congressional delegation to Asia "will be postponed to a later date."

Moreover, Hammill said the House Speaker is currently asymptomatic, noting that she tested negative earlier this week.

Having been at the White House next to President Joe Biden, the White House affirmed that Biden was not considered a close contact of the top House Democrat.

The White House also said the President tested negative Wednesday night as part of regularly scheduled testing.
