Nabil Fahmy Meets U.N. Committee Chief to Boost Support for Palestinian Rights

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy met with Coly Seck, chairman of the U.N. Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, to discuss strengthening coordination in support of Palestinian rights and expanding international recognition of a Palestinian state.

The meeting followed an international conference on Jerusalem held in Cairo on July 18, where participants reaffirmed the city's legal and historical status and called for protecting its identity.

Fahmy stressed the importance of capitalizing on growing international backing for the Palestinian cause to widen recognition of Palestine based on the 1967 borders. He also warned that Israeli settlement expansion and unilateral measures, particularly in Jerusalem, threaten the prospects for peace and undermine the Palestinian presence.

The Arab League chief also expressed concern over reports that some countries are considering relocating their embassies to Jerusalem, saying such moves would violate relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions and the city's legal status.
