Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman on Thursday, reaffirming the League's support for the Palestinian leadership and stressing that strengthening Palestinian resilience remains a top Arab priority.
According to the Arab League, Fahmy warned that Israeli policies were undermining prospects for a two-state solution through settlement expansion, displacement, restrictions on Palestinian cities and settler violence in the occupied West Bank. He called confronting such policies a shared Arab and international responsibility.
Fahmy also discussed the humanitarian and political situation in Gaza, emphasizing that the Palestinian Authority must play a central role in any future arrangements, with Gaza remaining an integral part of a future Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He welcomed plans for Palestinian legislative elections in November and called for increased financial support for the Palestinian Authority amid mounting fiscal pressures.
