The official North Korean Central News Agency warned today (Thursday) that the joint military exercises between the United States of America (USA) and South Korea currently underway will push the region "to the brink of nuclear war," according to the German news agency (dpa).
The German agency published an article by international security analyst Choi Joo-hyun, in which he denounced the exercises, saying that they would "push the situation on the Korean peninsula to the point of explosion."
"The hysteria of reckless military confrontation of the United States and its proxies against North Korea will push the situation on the Korean Peninsula towards an irreversible catastrophe," the article, published by the Pyongyang government's official agency, said.
North Korea's ballistic missile tests, which in some cases can be armed with a nuclear warhead, dramatically increased tensions on the Korean peninsula last year.
In the face of rising tensions with North Korea, the United States and its ally South Korea revealed their military might.
The South Korean Defense Ministry said the United States had sent the B-52-H long-range bomber to the Korean peninsula to take part in the joint air exercises. This bomber is like a carrier of nuclear weapons.
