North Korea is working to restore underground tunnels of its purportedly demolished Punggye-ri nuclear test site, Yonhap News Agency reported on Friday.
The agency indicated that North Korea had started work to remove South Korean-built facilities at the Mount Kumgang resort on its east coast.
The moves may heighten tensions between the North and the South as Seoul said Pyongyang could engage in provocative acts after its veiled threat in January to lift a voluntary moratorium on nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests.
Talk of another North Korean nuclear test has emerged, as the North has launched a ballistic missile off its east coast towards the sea, in the eighth missile test this year.
The southern military said the missile, launched from Sinan near Pyongyang, the North’s capital, flew 186 miles to the east, reaching an altitude of 385 miles.
North Korea has conducted seven missile tests in January, more than all of 2021. So far, it has held off on weapons tests this month, perhaps out of respect for China, its neighbor, and only major ally, which has been hosting Beijing Winter Olympics.
