On Monday, North Korea said its strategic weapons development was aimed at strenghthening its self-defence against threats from the US, while accusing moves the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) against Pyongyang as internal interference.
In a statement carried by the official North Korean Central News Agency, Ri Pyong-chol, the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party, stated that The Nnorth's development of advanced strategic weapons is a "project measure of self-defense" aimed at protecting Pyongyang from military threats posed by Washington.
It is known that Ri led North Korea's nuclear and missile development since the early months of Kim Jong-un's rule, which began in late 2011.
The statement came amid renewed tensions over Pyongyang's recent weapons tests, including what it claims is a solid-fuel Hwasong-18 s intercontinental ballistic missile last week.
The vice president also condemned the United States for portraying North Korea's exercise of self-defense rights as a "provocation" and "threat" by mobilizing the UNSC, calling it a "blatant act of interference" in North Korea's internal affairs.
