Myanmar’s army accused detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday of illegally accepting $ 600,000 and more than 11 kilograms of gold in bribes.
"We have learned that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi took 600,000 dollars and seven pairs (11.2 kilograms) of gold," army spokesman Zhao Min Tun told reporters in the capital, Naypyidaw.
Last week, the UN envoy to Myanmar urged the Security Council to take action against Myanmar’s military over killing protesters, saying that a "real war" is possible in the country.
Violent clashes between security forces and protesters continued in Myanmar as demonstrators are taking to streets in different cities to protest the Military coup that took place on Feb. 1.
Earlier, the US Department of Commerce announced imposing sanctions on Myanmar’s Ministries of Defense and home affairs by adding them in its trade blacklist, to punish Myanmar’s army for its Feb 1 coup.
Sanctions were imposed on the two ministries, in addition to two other entities in the country, due to the coup in Myanmar, according to a statement by the US Department.
