The military junta that seized power in Myanmar with the coup d'état in February 2021 decreed the dissolution of the National League for Democracy (NLD), the party of deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The announcement came from the military-appointed election commission after the party refused to register for the upcoming general election.
"We in no way accept that elections can be held at a time when many political leaders and activists are under arrest and when people are being tortured by the army," explained former NLD deputy Bo Bo Oo.
In reality, a date has not yet been set for the vote: the junta led by General Min Aung Hlaing had promised elections by August 2023, but last month it was forced to postpone the consultations to a later date, admitting not to have control of large swathes of territory.
Yesterday, on the occasion of the military parade for Armed Forces Day, the officer said that the elections would be held only after "decisive action" against the opponents and the ethnic armed groups that support them.
