Myanmar's ruling military council has announced an extension of the state of emergency for an additional six months.

The move, confirmed on Friday by the Eleven Myanmar newspaper, underscores the council's ongoing commitment to completing the necessary tasks for conducting general elections.

The head of the military council stated that there are still critical tasks that must be completed to ensure the successful conduct of the elections.

He also emphasized that stability and peace remain essential for ensuring that the elections are free and fair.

This extension reflects the continued political uncertainty in Myanmar following the military coup in February 2021, which ousted the democratically elected government.

Despite calls for a return to civilian rule, the military government has maintained its grip on power, citing the need for security and stability before elections can take place.
