Elon Musk has filed a landmark lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, accusing the two tech giants of monopolistic practices that undermine competition in the fast-growing artificial intelligence sector.
The lawsuit, lodged in Texas by Musk’s AI venture xAI, claims Apple’s App Store unfairly prioritizes OpenAI’s ChatGPT over rival platforms such as Grok, effectively starving competitors of vital user engagement. Musk argued that Apple’s partnership with OpenAI, which integrates ChatGPT into iPhones, iPads, and Macs, locks the market and stifles innovation.
On his X platform, Musk highlighted the issue, pointing out that despite Grok receiving a million reviews with a near-perfect rating, Apple refuses to feature it in key app listings.
Apple has defended its App Store policies as fair and impartial, while OpenAI dismissed Musk’s lawsuit as harassment.
Industry analysts suggest the case could set a precedent, as it may push US courts to define the boundaries of competition in the AI marketplace for the first time.
With Apple holding 65 percent of the US smartphone market and OpenAI commanding around 85 percent of the AI chatbot market, the lawsuit represents a pivotal clash in the future of artificial intelligence regulation.
