Musk Calls for Dissolution of EU

American entrepreneur Elon Musk has called for the dissolution of the European Union, arguing that full sovereignty should return to individual member states.

Writing on his platform X, Musk said the EU should be “eliminated” so that national governments can better represent their citizens.

He criticized what he described as Europe’s “slowly suffocating” bureaucracy and questioned the extent of US protection offered to the bloc.

Musk’s remarks come at a time of heightened tension between X and EU regulators. In July, the European Commission warned the platform that it was violating the Digital Services Act (DSA) in several areas, including advertising transparency and the provision of data to researchers.

The Commission has threatened penalties of up to 6% of the company’s global annual revenue if breaches continue.

The DSA, which came into force in August 2023, requires major digital platforms to curb illegal and misleading content, ensure transparency in algorithms, and provide access to researchers.

Last week, the Commission imposed a €120 million fine on X in the first enforcement action under the EU’s new content oversight rules, escalating the regulatory clash with Musk’s company.
