Uganda’s Electoral Commission announced on Saturday that President Yoweri Museveni has won the country’s presidential election by a wide margin, securing a seventh term in office and extending his decades-long grip on power.
The head of the Electoral Commission said Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, defeated his rivals by a significant margin in the vote held on Thursday.
The result further consolidates the position of the veteran leader, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving presidents.
In the same context, Ugandan police denied claims by the main opposition party that its leader, pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, had been arrested following the election.
Museveni remains a dominant political force in the country, with his supporters crediting him for stability and economic development since he came to power nearly four decades ago.
