"MULTI COMFORT CONTEST 2019" Kicks Off in Egypt

The first stages of the competition "MULTI COMFORT CONTEST 2019" began recently at local stage. Egypt is participating in this competition, a global student contest for an Italian residential community project at the level of universities.

Prof. Hossam Eldin Elboromboly, ex-head of Architecture Department of Ain shams- Head of Jury, said: "The National Stage Competition kicked off among students and/or universities of the same country. Students with the best project will travel and compete in the international stage. The International Stage will include: a three-day event with the exhibition of the projects, students’ presentations, awarding ceremony and local activities. Participants have just 5 minutes to present their projects and demonstrate why they deserve the 1st prize."

He explained that the participants are students of architecture, construction engineering, design and any other discipline can participate as inpiduals or in teams of 2 persons. And the jury, during the international stage, is normally a group of local representatives, recognized international architects and Saint-Gobain experts".

The competition national stage jury include the following: Prof. Hossam Eldin Elboromboly – ex-head of Architecture Department of Ain shams- Head of Jury, Prof. Khaled Elzahabi – Chairman of Housing & Building National Research Center, HBRC, Prof. Ahmed Sherif – Head of Architecture Department of AUC, Prof. Ahmed Ouf – Head of Architecture Department of Cairo University, Prof. Mohamed Abou Elmagd – Head of Architecture Department of Fine Arts, Prof. Hassan Abdel Salam – Head of Architecture Department of Alexandria University, Prof. Sherif Elfiky – Head of Architecture Department of Arab Academy for Science & Technology, Prof. Lamis Elgizawy – Head of Architecture Department of Mansoura University, Prof. Ayman Osman – Head of Architecture Department of British University.

Nada Chami, Business Development Manager at Saint-Gobain, presented some information about Milan, in order to introduce students to what is required in the competition project, came during the launch of the local competition at the level of Egyptian universities.

She said: "Milan is facing a new development stage. By 2030, more than 12,000 people will be over 85 years old while more than 50,000 will represent the young population between 19 and 34 years old. The plan under development for this city is looking for an inclusive growth, for everybody and everywhere."

She explained that there is no chance to leave someone behind and efforts need to be focused in the city center as well as on the outskirts. At the same time, the growth needs to be sustainable and aiming to improve the quality of life of all people living in Milan.

"By 2030, Milan Municipality expects this city to be a hub for global network connecting people and places through new platforms, attracting people offering personal, professional and social opportunities, increasing its respect towards the environment and fostering a growing sustainable attitude in the continuous regeneration process within the city development," added Business Development Manager.

Chami said: "The 15th international edition of the Multi Comfort Student Contest, developed by Saint-Gobain in close collaboration with Milan Municipality, is the rejuvenation and urban reconnection of Crescenzago metro station area in line with #milano2030 vision. The participants are required to create a vision for a future and sustainable development of Crescenzago metro station area integrated to the urban space and taking into account the regional context of the site."

Chami elaborated that the project will require the renovation of three existing buildings connected with a new mix-used development including residential, public spaces and services. The project must be innovative, sustainable, energy efficient and aligned with the MULTI COMFORT criteria.

The time line for this competition is: last registration date 31 March, National Stage in April, Submission for International Stage Before 10th of May and International Stage on 5-8 June. The three winners of the local stage will be rewarded as follows: 1st Prize 20 000 EGP, 2nd Prize 10 000 EGP and 3rd Prize 5000 EGP. The top three winners will compete at the International level in Italy.

The judging criteria will be as follows: "Architecture": 50% for Design excellence, functional concept and regional aspects, layout, "Construction details": 20% for Quality and consistency of the proposed construction details with regards to building physics, "Technical criteria": 20% for Constructions comply with the Saint-Gobain MULTI COMFORT criteria as well as fire safety strategy, "Products usage": 10% for Correct usage and mentioning of Saint-Gobain products and solutions.

This is the first time, Egypt is participating in a global student competition for an Italian residential community project, through two stages, the first one is a local competition at the level of universities which is scheduled to be launched MULTI COMFORT CONTEST 2019 SEMINAR.
