Morocco has decided to import about 10 million tons of grains during the current agricultural season to compensate for the shortfall in domestic production, which is expected to not exceed 2.5 million tons due to drought, several Moroccan local newspapers reported.

According to the specialized agriculture website "Agro Popular" in Spain, the quantity of imported grains, including durum and common wheat, maize, and barley, is considered "exceptional" due to the country's unprecedented low production this year since 1981.

If these forecasts are approved, imports will increase by 12% compared to the previous period.

The source noted that the average grain imports to Morocco over the past decade reached 7 million tons in a country with a population of 33.8 million.

According to the latest census in 2014, each consumes 200 kilograms of wheat annually.
