Morocco is preparing to finalize a major defense contract with Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer to purchase between four and five KC-390 Millennium tactical transport aircraft, valued at around $600 million, according to Moroccan media reports on Friday.

Citing local outlet Hespress, the deal is expected to replace the ageing fleet of C-130H Hercules transport planes currently in service with the Royal Moroccan Air Force.

The KC-390, capable of carrying up to 26 tons of cargo at speeds approaching 870 km/h, is regarded as a modern and versatile aircraft suitable for a wide range of missions.

The Brazilian-built aircraft features a fly-by-wire control system, advanced avionics, a rear cargo ramp, and the ability to take off and land on short or unprepared runways, making it ideal for operations in remote or desert environments.

It can accommodate more than 64 fully equipped paratroopers for airborne operations and can also be configured as an aerial refueling tanker, capable of delivering up to 400 gallons of fuel per minute.

The planned acquisition forms part of Morocco’s broader strategy to diversify its defense procurement and reduce reliance on US-made systems, reflecting Rabat’s growing defense ties with partners in the Global South.

Negotiations are expected to be concluded by the end of this year, with initial deliveries projected for 2027.
