At least 90 people died after a suspension bridge collapsed in India on Sunday, authorities announced.

More than 400 people were on the bridge when it collapsed in the town of Morbi and were plunged into the Machchhu River, according to Zee News.

Footage broadcast by the TV channel showed dozens of people clinging to the cables of the collapsed bridge as emergency teams sought to rescue them.

The 230-meter historic bridge was built during British rule in the 19th century. It had been closed for renovation for six months and was reopened for the public last week.

On his part, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had directed the state chief minister to deploy teams urgently for the rescue operation.

Modi's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) would offer 200,000 Indian rupees to the families of the dead (around £2,090) and 50,000 Indian rupees (around £520) offered to the injured.
