Moldova's Agriculture Minister Radu Musteata has resigned just two days after taking office following allegations linking him to the former Democratic Party led by fugitive oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc.
Musteata said he stepped down to preserve public trust as the government prepares to implement major reforms. He denied claims circulating on social media that he had ties to Plahotniuc, who was sentenced in absentia to 19 years in prison over the theft of $1 billion from Moldova's banking system.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said the resignation was a personal decision and described it as a responsible step to maintain confidence in the government, adding that a replacement would be appointed soon.
Musteata was named agriculture minister as part of Moldova's new government approved on 21 July, but his resignation followed renewed scrutiny over one of the country's biggest financial scandals, dating back to 2014.
