Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt and UN Special Envoy on Financing 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, pointed out that youth represents an essential factor in shaping plans and implementing climate action.
Mohieldin's remarks came during the "Increasing access to climate finance for non-state actors" session within the activities of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
He noted COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh witnessed the first Youth and Children pavilion on the level of COPs and the participation of a big number of youth and children that have inspiring ideas in the fields of nature and climate.
Mohieldin stated that climate action generally requires leadership that can make hard decisions, scientific and technological solutions, and sufficient and just finance for climate projects.
The official explained that UAE leadership provides a leading model as it benefits from the lessons of the past and looks forward to the future to build a flowering present in all fields.
He stressed the importance of science and technological solutions in the field of climate and noted that scientific solutions contributed to the increase and diversity of renewable energy projects and led to increased investment in these projects.
The climate champion stated that financing climate action must consider debt reduction in developing countries so that they can achieve their climate targets and find investable and bankable projects.
"This is what the Five Regional Roundtables Initiative launched by Egypt's presidency of COP27, UN regional economic commissions and HLCs succeeded to do."
He stressed the necessity of activating innovative finance instruments and pushing funds into the most-needed fields of climate action.
