Egyptian novelist and playwright Mohamed Salmawy expressed deep gratitude to the Emirate of Sharjah and its ruler after being named the “Cultural Personality of the Year” at the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair.
In his acceptance speech, Salmawy said the emirate had long honored Arab intellectuals by turning culture into a way of life. “Sharjah honored me and all Arab thinkers when it chose to embrace culture and became one of the most vibrant centers of enlightenment in the Arab world,” he said.
Salmawy described the fair as a renewed call to uphold faith in culture, knowledge, and the shared identity of the Arab people. “The Arab intellectual must not only bear witness to his time,” he said, “but also shape it and light its torches amid the darkness some try to impose upon us.”
He was honored by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah.
