Opposition leader Mohamed Muiz won the runoff Maldives elections on Sunday.
Muiz secured more than 53% of the votes, according to local media.
Mihaaru News reported President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received 46% of the vote and that Muiz won by more than 18,000 votes.
Muiz responded to his victory saying: “With today’s result we have got the opportunity to build the country’s future. The strength to ensure the freedom of Maldives.”
He added: “It’s time we put our differences aside and come together. We need to be a peaceful society.”
The previous president of the Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih voted at a polling station on Saturday.
Maldives presidential runoff elections took place on September 30.
