Former UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov, said he hopes the Gaza Strip and the West Bank can be unified under a single national leadership at the end of a transitional period outlined by the UN Security Council.

In a televised interview, Mladenov noted that the Security Council had identified a two-year transitional period, stressing that its success depends largely on developments on the ground.

“We hope that by the end of the transitional period, Gaza and the West Bank will be unified under one national leadership,” Mladenov said, adding that efforts are underway to restore the political track of the Palestinian cause to its proper path.

He emphasized the importance of enabling a Palestinian technocratic committee to assume its full civil, administrative, and security responsibilities in the Gaza Strip. Mladenov explained that the role of international actors is to support, guide, and assist the technocratic committee throughout the transition.

“We will work with mediators and all relevant parties to create the necessary conditions that allow the Palestinian technocratic committee to take over its responsibilities,” he said.
