Northern Israel came under heavy fire on Friday as more than 60 rockets were launched from southern Lebanon toward Israeli territory, according to Israeli media reports, in one of the most intense barrages in recent weeks.
Sirens sounded across parts of northern Israel, including the coastal city of Haifa and nearby Kiryat Ata, where falling rocket fragments were reported in at least 10 locations. Emergency services said at least six people were injured by shrapnel, with some receiving treatment at the scene.
The escalation coincided with what Israeli sources described as a separate Iranian missile strike targeting Haifa. The missile, reportedly carrying an explosive warhead, was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system. However, the interception caused the projectile to break apart mid-air, scattering debris and what were described as cluster-like submunitions over multiple areas, including Haifa Bay and eastern districts of the city.
Israeli police, bomb disposal units, and medical teams were deployed to the impacted sites, cordoning off affected areas and urging residents to stay away from suspicious objects due to the risk of additional explosions. Authorities also launched extensive field sweeps to locate and neutralize unexploded remnants.
The attacks prompted heightened security measures across northern Israel, with increased alert levels at embassies and critical infrastructure facilities. Officials warned that the situation remains volatile, particularly as the rocket fire from Lebanon unfolded simultaneously with the reported Iranian strike.
Military assessments cited by Israeli media suggested that ongoing operations targeting Iran could continue for up to 10 days, raising concerns about further regional escalation.
