The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population announced this Sunday morning that medical alerts across hospitals have been escalated to monitor the situation following a train collision in Minya closely.
The Ministry confirmed that 23 ambulances were dispatched to the accident site and heightened alertness to the maximum level, noting that 20 passengers were initially reported injured in the collision.
Civil Protection forces are currently attempting to rescue passengers from the Minya train, after two carriages derailed following the collision of two trains near Maqousa village, close to Minya Governorate.
The incident occurred when two trains collided while traveling on the railway tracks, causing several carriages to fall into the Ibrahimia Canal. Authorities are now investigating the causes and circumstances of the incident.
The Egyptian National Railways had previously reported in a press release that the collision involved a locomotive rear-ending train no. 1087, the sleeper car from Aswan to Cairo. The impact caused the locomotive and another carriage to derail. Emergency equipment and cranes were immediately deployed, the train was detached from the derailed carriages, and the remainder of the train continued its journey towards Cairo.
Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir has instructed the Deputy Minister of Transport for Railways and Electric Traction and the Head of the National Railways to visit the accident site and form a committee of railway experts to determine the technical causes of the collision.
