A group of military personnel in Guinea-Bissau announced "full control" over the country "until further notice," after detaining the outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló inside the Presidential Palace in the capital, Bissau.
The servicemen declared their complete control over the country, the suspension of the electoral process, and the closure of borders, pending the results of the presidential and legislative elections that took place on Sunday.
This occurred after the sound of gunfire was heard near the Presidential Palace, where men in military uniform took control of the main road leading to the palace in the West African nation, which has witnessed numerous political disturbances, including four coups and several attempted coups since its independence.
The military personnel read a statement at the army headquarters in the capital, Bissau, according to AFP correspondents
