Nigerian authorities in the northern state of Kaduna confirmed that the militants had not taken control and closed the international airport, as some reports came in last weekend.

The militants attacked nine villages in the Giwa district of the state, killing at least 50 people and kidnapping dozens.

Mansour Ibrahim, a member of a vigilante group in the area, told the "Saturday Tribune", a Nigerian daily newspaper, that the bandits also burned homes and destroyed cars in the affected communities.

The army confirmed the thieves’ attack but explained that the place was 6 kilometers from the airport terminal and outside its fence.

The army statement confirmed the killing of 12 bandits in an airstrike.

On his part, Brig.  Gen. Obeni, commander of the military garrison, addressing the journalists at the scene of the attack, said that Kaduna International Airport is very safe, adding that there are several levels of security at the airport, and bandits could not dare to attack it.
