Data from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, reveals a 22% decrease in irregular migrant crossings into the European Union during the first ten months of this year, with a total of 152,000 cases recorded.

Despite this decline, human losses remain alarmingly high.

The most significant drops were observed along the West African route, down 59%, the Western Balkans route, down 46%, and the Eastern land borders, down 38%.

However, the Central Mediterranean route continues to be the busiest, accounting for two out of every five irregular entries into the EU this year.

Frontex recorded nearly 59,000 arrivals on the Central Mediterranean route between January and October, a figure comparable to the same period in 2024. Libya remains the main departure point, representing 90% of all arrivals via this route.

Meanwhile, flows across the Eastern and Western Mediterranean have declined by 25% and 27% respectively.
