According to authorities, a fire that started overnight at a four-story hostel building in the centre of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, claimed the lives of many individuals and left up to 30 others missing.

Around 12:30 am on Tuesday, firefighters were called to the Loafers Lodge hostel on Adelaide Road in the heart of Wellington, where a fire had broken out on the top floor.

Although the precise number is now unknown, the police's early opinion is that there were fewer than 10 fatalities.

52 individuals were removed from the structure, and at least five were saved from the roof, but more individuals are still missing, according to the police.

Two of the five hospitalised patients were in a critical condition.

There were about 90 residents in the building, and after the evacuation, about 30 people were still missing, according to a fire and emergency service official.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins of New Zealand suggested that there might be additional casualties when speaking to a morning news programme.
