Microsoft announced a $10 billion investment in Japan over the next four years to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure and build new data centers, as demand for cloud and AI services surges.

Microsoft President Brad Smith revealed the plan during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, stating the investment is aimed at meeting growing demand for advanced digital services in Japan.

The initiative will focus on developing AI-ready data centers and strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure. Microsoft also plans to partner with major Japanese firms, including SoftBank and Sakura Internet, to expand local capabilities.

The move builds on a previous $2.9 billion investment announced in 2024 to support Japan’s AI development and enhance cybersecurity. The latest plan also includes funding to deepen cybersecurity cooperation with government agencies and train one million engineers in collaboration with NTT and NEC.

Japan, the world’s fourth-largest economy, is racing to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving AI sector. However, the expansion of data centers faces challenges, including limited land availability and relatively high electricity costs.

Globally, the rapid growth of energy-intensive data centers, used to power AI tools such as chatbots and image generators, has raised environmental concerns, particularly in Asia, where expansion is accelerating.

The investment follows Microsoft’s recent announcement of plans to invest more than $1 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure in Thailand over the next two years, highlighting the company’s broader push to scale AI capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region.
